Bali
Gili Islands
The largest and most well-known Gili T is a backpackers haven which brings with it, like all things, pros and cons. It has the infrastructure for tourists along with lots to do and if you’re looking for a good time then you’ve found it. On the other hand, if you’re looking for a quiet getaway this might not be the best place.
Travel Guide for Gili Trawangan
My favorite of the three, Gili Air is the perfect balance between the two. There is fun nightlife but it’s easy to get away from that as well. You can find your own little slice of paradise or meet tons of fun new friends.
The smallest island is perfect for a romantic getaway or a quiet escape.
Lombok
18 Ultimate Things to do in Lombok, Indonesia
15 things you should see on Lombok
One of the toughest climbs I’ve done around the world but worth every second. Both the climb and the sweeping views will literally and figuratively take your breath away. The pictures don’t even begin to do it justice. The triumph you feel surrounded by 360 degree views looking out over the Gilis, Bali and beyond (even after having been rained on) is one of the most glorious feelings in the world.

The Best Things to do in Lake Toba
Step off the grid and into the rainforest to one of the only places in the world where you can see orangutans in the wild. You’ll need a licensed guide with proper permits to go into the jungle as it is protected land and make sure you do your research to choose a responsible company. You should never be touching, feeding or getting anywhere close to the orangutans for both their healthy and safety as well as your own. More information on how to choose a company provided in the links below.
Important things to know before heading to Bukit Lawang:
- There are no ATMs. And many places do not accept credit cards so make sure you have enough cash to cover your trip before you arrive. Worst case scenario you pay someone to take you out of town to the nearest ATM (about 10 km away) but it’ll obviously cost money
- Wifi is spotty, if at all existent. You’re in the jungle so don’t expect the amenities and infrastructure to necessarily be what you might be used to. Bask in the glory of disconnecting for a few days.
- Bring your own TP and hand sanitizer, just in case. Your accommodation will most likely have it but restaurants might not and the jungle definitely won’t.
Java
The number one place I want to hit upon my return to Indonesia. The only reason I didn’t go the first time is there is so much to do and see and I didn’t have enough time to give this island the attention it deserves!

Flores Island
Not originally on my radar but it looks incredible and more off the beaten path which I love. My list keeps growing the more I learn about this insane country.
Komodo National Park
Another place I would like to visit next time I travel but getting there was a bit too much work for the amount of time I had.
