Mongolia Highlights
The West
Some people forget that getting off the beaten path often time means leaving behind the comforts that come with it as well. Expect to sleep on the ground, go to the bathroom outside behind a rock, have no showers and no wifi for the duration of your time outside of the city.
What to Expect
Beyond that, you can expect absolute serenity. You are truly in the wild and it is an unforgettable experience. You will meet and connect with real nomads, escape into nature and recapture the beauty in simplicity.
Go trekking, ride horses, climb the Altai mountains and really dig into the nomadic culture. But avoid eagle hunters – while it is touted as an age old tradition, it is outdated and cruel.
The Gobi Desert
After the capital of Ulaanbaatar the Gobi Desert is probably the most popular destination due to its relative proximity to the city and its unique terrain. This was ironically the thing I was most looking forward to when I was planning my trip here but I decided to head out west first and upon my return I was ready to move on. But all the travelers I talked to had a great time here!
The North
I really wanted to visit the North. It offers a different experience than both the West and the Gobi. Visiting reindeer farms and exploring the forests was something I would’ve really liked to have done but my exhaustion from having been on the road for long at this point mixed with the prices of doing three separate tours, I just didn’t have it in me to stay longer.
