Coming: Take a 30 minute songthaew from Krabi town. Once you’re there I’d recommend renting a scooter for a day or two to get around.
Sleeping: Slumber Party Hostel is the place to be. It’s a party hostel where intoxication, nudity and debauchery of all kinds are not only tolerated but encouraged. I didn’t stay here so can’t accurately rate it, but I hung out there and there was a great vibe and my friends who stayed there had a great time. It’s located on a main road with a lot of food options but the beach and main strip of bars and shops are about a 20 minute walk.
3 Bees Guesthouse: Owned by a nice Italian guy (which made my day) and right next door to Slumber Party. A quieter and more private alternative with all the fun right next door. Nice facilities but no free breakfast. I wouldn’t recommend it for a solo traveler, though. More expensive and you probably won’t meet many people.
Eating: Like everywhere else, Thai food is going to be your cheapest option and is always delicious. Ao Nang has a large Muslim population as well though, due to its proximity to Malaysia and you’ll be able to find some EXCELLLENT Indian food that is also fairly inexpensive.
Doing: Take a scooter out, watch the sunset on the beach, hike, party, scuba dive and rock climb, visit nearby islands
Scooter- Rent a scooter to get a little farther out of town. The things you unintentionally stumble upon are usually the best things.
Price- Less than ฿200 THB/day (<$6.12 USD)
Beach- The beaches along the main strip aren’t anything special but do have lovely sunsets. If you want to have a better experience, take that scooter and escape to a more secluded beach nearby.
Hike- We accidentally found this National Park. It was a Sunday and therefore closed, but it’s Thailand, and rules are more like suggestions. We hopped off the bike and let ourselves in. Wearing swimsuits and flip flops we decided to take a leisurely stroll up to what the map calls “Viewpoint 1”. Except somehow we got lost. 10 km later we found ourselves watching sunset over the whole province. Or so it seemed.
There were a few other groups up there who had brought gear to camp. We had come unprepared and had to start making our way back down. The way back was a bit treacherous due to the fact that now the sun was down and the trees and cloud cover meant there was no moonlight. My phone was dying and we had save the battery for directions back to town. So we cautiously made our way down the mountain in the pitch blackness and horrible shoes. Adventure! Unfortunately I have no idea what the name of the park is. I’ve tried looking it up so many times and have come up with zilch.
Party- Slumber Party has various events going on depending on the night of the week. You can also head to the lady boy show or the bars down by the beach.
Diving, rock climbing and excursions- Time didn’t allow for this but ask reception at wherever you’re staying and there are a lot of different options!
Staying: 2-3 days
Going: Take a ferry to one of the islands or head back to Krabi to catch a flight out or over to the other coast. I went onto Phi Phi from here.
